Applications

Transformer applications: solar, wind and battery storage

Solar, wind and battery storage projects put transformers under duty cycles that grid transformers never see — rapid load swings, high harmonic content, extreme ambient, and sites with no grid to lean on.

At Harbin Transformer, we focus our international offering on 100 kV to 500 kV transformers for renewable energy — solar, wind and BESS projects.

Our experience is shaped by more than manufacturing heritage. It is also shaped by the demands placed on transformers in Chinese renewable energy projects: high altitude, low temperatures, sand and dust, salt spray, large temperature swings, and complex grid-interconnection requirements and equipment interfaces.

Reliable renewable energy transformer performance must be designed in through engineering analysis and testing — and validated against the actual conditions of each project.

These are the transformers for renewable energy that we build — specified against the real duty cycle rather than a nameplate rating.

Solar PV

Utility-scale solar inverters push harmonic currents that a standard distribution transformer was never designed for. We size for the inverter duty cycle, not the nameplate.

Onshore wind

Wind transformers see continuous cyclic loading and, on many sites, extreme cold. Both accelerate ageing if the design assumes a steady load at 20 °C.

Battery energy storage

BESS transformers are sized on charge and discharge duty, reactive support and ambient — rarely on the continuous rating the datasheet quotes.

Other segments we serve

We also build transformers for offshore wind. A detailed page for this segment is in preparation.

What all these projects share

High harmonic content from power electronics. Duty cycles that swing harder than the nameplate assumes. Sites in desert heat, at altitude, in coastal salt or in deep cold. Delivery dates tied to a construction schedule. And a 25-year financing horizon that makes life-cycle cost, not purchase price, the real number.
