500 kV power transformers
Harbin Transformer is a 500 kV power transformer manufacturer. We build three-phase units from 120 to 600 MVA and single-phase units from 120 to 400 MVA for transmission substations and large renewable plant interconnection, tested on our 4800 kV lightning impulse system.
Range
| Three-phase | 120 to 600 MVA, vector group YNd11 |
|---|---|
| Single-phase | 120 to 400 MVA, type ODSZ |
| Voltage combination | 500 / 220 / 110 / 35 kV as required |
| Low-voltage winding | 13.8 / 15.75 / 18 / 20 / 24 kV for GSU duty |
| Tap changing | on-load, with a wide regulating range for grid voltage variation |
Test capability at this class
The 500 kV class requires lightning impulse withstand levels up to 1675 kV depending on the insulation level specified under IEC 60071-1. Our 4800 kV impulse generator system covers this class with substantial margin, which means impulse type testing does not depend on an external laboratory queue.
Manufacturing base
500 kV units are built at our Harbin plant, a 120,000 m² facility established in 1955 and designed for 1000 kV / 1000 MVA class production. The shielded high-voltage test hall and the 4800 kV impulse system are on the same site, which removes the transport risk of moving a completed unit to an external laboratory.
Design considerations
At this rating the design is dominated by insulation co-ordination, short-circuit withstand and transport limits. Single-phase units are often chosen where transport weight or route restrictions rule out a three-phase unit, or where a spare single-phase unit is a cheaper strategic spare than a spare three-phase unit.
Typical applications
500 kV transmission substations. Main step-up transformers at large renewable energy bases where the grid connection is at 500 kV. Interconnection between regional grids. Large industrial loads requiring a high-capacity infeed.
